Klarus ST12 - FlashlightZ Opinion

Author : Carolyn

And the flashlight of the day is the Klarus ST12. This is a simple, no-nonsense flashlight that will become one of your most reliable companions. In the last couple of years, flashlight companies have been producing really advanced flashlights that come with programmable settings, different operational settings, and so many features that you might actually have to refer to the instruction manual on several different occasions to learn all the aspects of the flashlight, and with Klarus flashlights, there have been no difference there. We still see many advanced flashlights, such as the Klarus XT11GT, or the Klarus XT12GT. Both these flashlights do come with a massive amount of features. So, what if you don't want all of those features? What if you just want a flashlight that delivers a good amount of power, that you can rely on, and that you don't need to refer to the manual every so often? Thankfully, Klarus has made some flashlights for that purpose as well, and the ST12 is one of them.

The Klarus ST12 is a little over five inches, it's about 5.3 inches, pushing it into the medium-sized flashlight category, but just barely. The size of the Klarus ST12 is perfect for just putting into your pocket, depending on your size of pockets, and putting in a bag, leaving around the house, to use whenever you need it. This is an excellent flashlight for that, not to mention, it's very lightweight. I know many people have those heavier, handheld, low-quality flashlights that they'll use for emergencies. The ST12 is significantly more powerful, compact, and lightweight, and you can rely on it time and time again. If you need a flashlight just around the house, the Klarus ST12 is great for that.

It delivers 900 lumens, which is a great amount of power, especially for a household light. There are many Klarus flashlights that are over 1,000, up to 2,000 lumens, but you'll find that around the house, this can often be too much light. That 900 lumens is an excellent amount of light if you are looking around your house, worried about little bumps in the night, concerned someone might have intruded, this is the flashlight you're going to want.

Let's talk a little bit about the user interface of the Klarus ST12. This flashlight has only one single side-switch, located near the neck of the flashlight. Very different from the XT11GT, which has three switches total. With that single switch, there's no guess work, there's no fumbling, you know what you're getting. With one single, short press, you can activate the flashlight, turning it on or off, and by continuing to press it, you can change to the different brightness levels. No fuss, no complications, you're good to go. A lot of users can be concerned about that side-switch, specifically because if you put it in a bag, it might get pressed, it might accidentally illuminate, and Klarus has made sure that you're protected for this. The ST12 does have a lockout feature, so you don't need to worry about the flashlight turning on in your pocket or in your bag. There will be no accidental illumination, so long as you use that feature.

The Klarus ST12 has a total of five different lighting modes, including two flashing modes, a strobe and an SOS. When looking at the different brightness levels, you have the high, which is 900 lumens, you have the medium, which is 400 lumens, and you have the low, which is 80 lumens. If you hear a noise in your house at night, you may prefer those 80 lumens. It's not going to blind you, but it's still going to give you a good amount of light to see what is happening in your house and where you're walking, without having to turn on any of the light switches. If something doesn't seem right in your yard, your backyard, then that high, the 900 lumens, will definitely come in handy. You will be able to spot any intruders, or even if it's just a possum, you'll be able to find it.

I want to touch on the strobe and the SOS mode. These are two excellent modes to have on a flashlight. Sometimes, flashlights will only come with a strobe mode or an SOS mode, so when you have both options, it's a really great deal. That strobe mode is an excellent, non-lethal self-defense feature that you absolutely want in a flashlight, especially if you're going to be carrying it on you. So, if you're heading home from a social gathering, or from work, and it's late at night, you can feel safe and protected knowing you have that strobe feature ready to go. In fact, without that strobe feature, a flashlight's not usually considered tactical. In this case, I wouldn't consider the ST12 tactical either, because you can't immediately access that strobe mode. However, it is nice that they included a tactical feature on this flashlight. The SOS mode is better to be used in an outdoor situation. So, if your car breaks down, if you're lost in the woods, turn on that SOS mode, and you will definitely call attention to yourself, and someone will come help you.

The Klarus ST 12 also has an important feature that I want to talk about, that I personally believe is essential in any outdoor flashlight, and that is the intelligent memory function. This feature will remember the last brightness level you used, whether it's the high, the medium, or the low, and when you turn it back on, it will go straight to the last brightness you used, so if you prefer keeping it at the medium level, make sure to turn the ST12 off when you're in that medium brightness level, and it will turn back on to that same level. This feature is great for multiple reasons, the first reason is that it's incredibly convenient. A lot of flashlights will immediately turn on in the high mode, and this can often blind you, blind your companions, it can be a little too much light all at once, so it's really nice that you get to choose what level you prefer the flashlight to be at.

Another reason this feature is such an important feature for an outdoor flashlight is because you can conserve battery power by using this feature. Let's say you choose to keep it in the low mode, that low mode has a 25 hour run time, so by continually turning on and off the flashlight while it's in the low mode, you will be conserving quite a bit of battery in the long run. Of course, you'll see this feature in other flashlights, but it is an important feature to have in an outdoor flashlight, because when you are outdoors, camping, hiking, what have you, you want to be able to conserve the battery as much as possible, and you want to make sure that you have an adequate amount of light. Not too much, not too little, the perfect amount.

All right, so what batteries does the ST12 run on? That's the good news. You can choose between a single 18650 lithium ion battery, or a pair of CR123A lithium batteries. The 18650 batteries are definitely nice because you can recharge them, however, the CR123A lithium batteries can be handy to have as back-up batteries, just in case you run out of juice on your 18650. However, that is a conversation for a different time. I think it's great that the ST12 has the option of either using an 18650, or a pair of CR123A batteries. A lot of flashlights require only one battery. This gives you a few options. If you're going on a camping trip, and say you only have a single 18650, you can go ahead and just grab a few CR123A batteries and put them in your pack, and those can be your back-up batteries in case you run out on that 18650.

Now, it's time to talk about the quality that you're going to find in a Klarus flashlight. I talk about this with every Klarus flashlight, because when it comes to a high-quality, not inexpensive LED flashlight, you really want a durable, sturdy light that you can depend on. The Klarus ST12 is made from a resilient aluminum alloy, and has that military-grade anodizing finish on it, which reduces wear and tear and really protects the body of the flashlight, making it look as new as possible, whether you ding it up, or drop it. Of course, if you put it through some rough times, it's probably going to show at some point, but it's not cheap plastic.

The ST12 is also waterproof, up to IPX8 standards, and if you don't know what that means, it means that you can submerge this flashlight underwater two meters for 30 minutes and know that it will work just as well as it always has. I talked about a lot of great features of this flashlight, but I will tell you one of my issues with it, and that's that it does not come with a battery. Not every LED flashlight needs to come with a battery, but it really does sweeten the deal whenever a flashlight does come with the battery, so for my personal Klarus flashlight review of the ST12, I would say nine out of 10. This is an excellent flashlight for you to have any outdoor use, or household use. Definitely give it a look.
